New tripod!

My new tripod arrived today (a Slik Sprint Pro II, a very good travel tripod according to the book I’ve been reading) and I had some fun experimenting with a long exposure shots.

The photos themselves are not that interesting to look at (and I’m sure there’s lots of technical errors, I’m still a beginner!), but I felt very intrepid setting up my tripod in the middle of the road and taking shots! And I suffered for my art, I count nine… no, ten mosquito bites! Both exposures were for around 50 seconds, aperture f/5.6, ISO 100. It was around 9:30PM.

Apart from long exposure photography, tripods are also good for kittens!

Album cover wall art

First blog post, hey! I’ll jump right in.

With @RealLeeTaylor away on holiday and me on a 2 week break between jobs, I decided to try and do something about the boring white walls in our flat. After playing around and making some truly ordinary mosaics using AndreaMosaic (blame the user, the software’s great), I settled on doing something with our favourite albums.

Blowing the album art up to vinyl cover size (12×12 in or 305x305mm) seemed like the obvious thing to do, but this is around half an inch or 7mm too big for A3 sized paper, and given the cost of printing 80 sheets of full colour A2 paper, I went with 290x290mm instead as it *just* fits on A3 paper. I spent around 5-6 hours sourcing album art from Google Images. Using Photoshop to replicate some of the text or simple objects at higher resolution and Benvista Photozoom 4 Pro to increase the resolution to 3500×3500, I managed to get everything fit for the printers.

The end result:

I got them printed on thick board paper and strolled into Kwik Kopy St Kilda with the CD full of PNGs! Kwik Kopy turned out to be a bit of a disaster, but the end result is pretty great – the photos don’t really do it much justice.
